Review of Tress of The Emerald Sea

Review of Tress of The Emerald Sea

Summary

The only life Tress has known on her island home in an emerald-green ocean has been a simple one, with the simple pleasures of collecting cups brought by sailors from faraway lands and listening to stories told by her friend Charlie. But when his father takes him on a voyage to find a bride and disaster strikes, Tress must stow away on a ship and seek the Sorceress of the deadly Midnight Sea. Amid the spore oceans where pirates abound, can Tress leave her simple life behind and make her own place sailing a sea where a single drop of water can mean instant death?

Content:

Violence: Mild, gun fights, descriptions of "spores" growing inside of people and killing them, some descriptions of blood, fist fight ending up in a few characters getting hurt, and one character kicks another.

Language: Minor, uses of d-, h, and b-words.

Romance and Spice: Minor, MC loves her childhood guy friend and describes how they fit together like a nice pair of gloves. They enjoy each other's company. No kissing.

Use of Drugs, Alcohol, or Other Substances: Minor, captain pulls out alcohol and MC thinks about how her only time drinking it made her drunk and talk a lot.

Other: Uses of magic, curses on characters, and a magical battle.

My Thoughts:

I loved Tress of The Emerald Sea! The first time I read it I literally finished it in 2 1/2 days... I love Tress as a character and how wholesome the whole book is. The cast is literally adorable and I literally love Dr. Ulaam. It also has Brandon Sanderson's signature humor which I appreciated (which if you have never read his works, is a cross between a sassy banter and humor only us in the real world get).

The only thing I would note is that there is violence with the spores of their world. They turn into things like spikes or vines and their are some descriptions of blood or how it would feel to grow inside of you. Also one character skin opens and vines inside of her grab a bullet from hitting her.

-Language excluding a few words sprinkled through
        -LGBTQ+
